Minnesota Mammography

DESCRIPTION
A phone survey will be conducted with women who participated in the Department of Health's free mammogram program during 1998-1999. Investigators are interested in women's experiences with the program; their perceptions about their future eligibility; as well as beliefs they currently hold about breast cancer detection, and health risk. A phone staff of all female interviewers will call an initial sample of 1550 women, staggered over a seven month period.

DESCRIPTION
Professor Yancey is utilizing WISCON to selectively recruit participants for a study he plans to conduct later in the academic year. A sociologist with expertise in the area of religion and race, Professor Yancey's latest study will examine the experiences of individuals who attend racially diverse parishes. Individuals who currently attend church, and who further attend racially diverse parishes, are asked whether they could be contacted for another study.

Adult Survey on Community and Youth

DESCRIPTION
This project is a RDD survey of 400 residents of mid-sized cities in the state of Wisconsin. The purpose is to examine how community connection mediates the relationship between involvement with and exposure to teenagers and adults' attitudes about youth in their community and in general.

1999 Department of Natural Resources Clean Air Project

DESCRIPTION
The 1999 DNR Clear Air Project is a telephone survey of 500 Wisconsin residents in a six county area in Metropolitan Milwaukee: Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha, Ozaukee and Washington counties. The sample is a random digit dial (RDD) sample of adult Wisconsin households in these counties. Respondents are asked to give their input on air pollution and public health in order to help the DNR find effective ways to balance environmental and transportation needs.

Survey of Third Quarter W-2 Leavers

DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this project is to provide a description of the experiences of people who left W-2, Wisconsin's work-based replacement for AFDC, during the third quarter of 1998 and to assess the effects of welfare reform on helping people obtain and retain employment. A name sample of 550 W-2 leavers has been provided to the UWSC by the DWD. The UWSC will conduct as many interviews by telephone as possible. Individuals who cannot be reached by phone will be interviewed in person by DWD field interviewers.

DESCRIPTION
The Minnesota Veterans Association is trying to determine whether a free medical reference manual provided to veterans receiving medical services in 1999 from VA physicians is being used prior to physician visits. Investigators wouldlike to know how frequently the reference manual is being used (if at all), how it is being used, along with the ease of use (e.g., are certain sections of the manual under or over-utilized, etc.). 200 Veterans will be called in October; the phone interview shoudl last approximately 5 minutes.

Survey of Fourth Quarter W-2 Leavers

DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this project was to provide a description of the experiences of people who left W-2, Wisconsin's work-based replacement for AFDC, during the fourth quarter of 1998 and to assess the effects of welfare reform on helping people obtain and retain employment. A name sample of 550 W-2 leavers was provided to the UWSC by the DWD. The UWSC conducted as many interviews by telephone as possible, then individuals who could not be reached by phone were be interviewed in person by DWD field interviewers. This marked the third round of calls the UWSC made to people who left W-2 in 1998. The UWSC interviewed individuals who left W-2 in the second quarter of 1998 earlier in 1999, and recently completed telephone interviews with third quarter leavers for the DWD.

Anglers

DESCRIPTION
Approximately 450 Wisconsin anglers (sportsfishers) who have purchased Great Lakes Salmon and Trout licenses and stamps are being called throughout the summer to determine the economic value they place on the non-market good of sportsfishing. The researchers are using "contingent valuation" in order to see whether the completed trip was worth the cost in terms of money, and fish catch. Anglers are being called every two weeks until September 15th, and will be asked to complete a mail survey at study's conclusion.

DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this project was to provide a description of the experiences of people who left W-2, Wisconsin's work-based replacement for AFDC, during the second quarter of 1998 and to asses the effects of welfare reform on helping people obtain and retain employment. A name sample of 550 W-2 leavers was provided to the UWSC by the DWD. The UWSC conducted 324 telephone interviews for this project usinga computer-assisted telephone interviewing system (CATI) for data collection. Individuals who could not be reached by phone were interviewed in person by DWD field interviewers (n=89), resulting in a total response rate of 75.4%.

Menominee River/Oak Creek Watershed Survey

DESCRIPTION
Work began in the spring of 1999 with a series of 8 focus groups conducted to develop a CATI questionnaire for an interdisciplinary group of researchers at Marquette University led by Dr. Robert Griffin. Funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, this project investigates how residents living in these two watersheds feel about flooding and environmental quality. This summer, Milwaukee area residents responded to a 30 minute interview, with a follow-up interview to be conducted next year.

Cancer Cluster Survey

DESCRIPTION
This was a mail survey, funded by the National Science Foundation, of residents of four cities in the U.S. (n=1558 total). The purpose of the project was to assess public health communication and the community decision making process. Mailing included and advance letter, two full mailings with survey, a reminder postcard, and a full mailing with a shortened survey to non-respondents. The overall response rate for all four communities combined was 47.3%.
